Problem
Section titled “Problem”Give the geometric interpretation of the following Cartesian products:
(a) two line segments; (b) two lines; (c) a line and a circle; (d) a line and a disk; (e) two circles; (f) a circle and a disk.
Solution
Section titled “Solution”Let , be the real line, be the unit circle, and be the closed unit disk.
| Product | Notation | Geometric interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| (a) | Two segments | Rectangle (including interior) |
| (b) | Two lines | Plane |
| (c) | Line circle | Infinite cylinder (without caps) |
| (d) | Line disk | Solid infinite cylinder |
| (e) | Circle circle | Torus (surface of a doughnut) |
| (f) | Circle disk | Solid torus (filled doughnut) |
Remarks
Section titled “Remarks”The general principle: the Cartesian product of two sets that are “geometric objects” of dimensions and respectively yields an object of dimension — provided one interprets “dimension” appropriately.
- (a) (rectangle)
- (c) (cylinder surface, a 2-manifold)
- (d) (solid cylinder)
- (e) (torus surface)
- (f) (solid torus)
