Why Munkres?
Section titled “Why Munkres?”Munkres’ Topology is the most widely used graduate-level introduction to the subject:
- Part I (Ch.1): Set theory foundations — axioms of choice, well-ordering, Zorn’s lemma
- Part II (Ch.2–8): Point-set topology — topological spaces, continuity, compactness, separation axioms, metrization (Urysohn theorem)
- Part III (Ch.9–14): Algebraic topology — fundamental group, covering spaces, the Seifert–van Kampen theorem
- Exceptionally large and well-sequenced exercise sets — ideal for self-study
- Clear, unhurried exposition with extensive worked examples
The book starts from near-scratch (only basic set theory assumed) and builds to serious results. It rewards slow, careful reading.

Solutions are added as I work through the text. Topology exercises will use TikZ for commutative diagrams and geometric illustrations.
